About John Emerson

Award-Winning Writer and Publisher

I have over 20 years experience as a freelance writer, especially in legal and content marketing writing.

But I can take on anything. I have published articles, features, opinion columns, book chapters and books.

For clients I have written blogs, brochures, product descriptions, biographies and newsletters. I was an early adopter of social media for growing audiences.

A recent large-scale content marketing commission was the selection, research and writing of 150 x 150-word texts for a corporate client seeking to celebrate their long and successful history. The texts are being prepared for ultimate publication in various digital and print formats.

My skills include structural and copy editing. I recently completed editing highly technical multi-million-dollar government grant applications in dicsiplines as diverse as cardiology and neuroscience.

In 2008 I founded the University of Adelaide Press and I was responsable for:

  • launch strategy
  • attracting authors
  • establishing submission and review processes
  • managing design of book covers, catalogues, newsletters, web pages
  • printer and distributor relations
  • establishing a shopping cart (first one in the University)
  • establishing social media accounts as an early adopter
  • copyright management
  • intellectual property permissions
  • setting up partnerships with Oxford and Cambridge Presses
  • Open Access licences and processes
  • etc.

I oversaw the complete processes to publish and promote 75+ books across 19 diverse research areas and those books found over 1 million readers by September 2018.

A wine title won a prestigious international award for best viticulture book.

In the 2000s I was commissioned to write 3 legal-based books on core aspects of the South Australian legal structures – First Among Equals:  Chief Justices of South Australia since Federation, A History of the Independent Bar of South Australia and John Jefferson Bray: a Vigilant Life.

In between I was writing restaurant reviews, travel features and international presentations.

During the 1990s to the early 2000s I completed three degrees at Adelaide University in South Australia and one at the Sorbonne-Nouvelle-Paris III in Paris. I ended up with a Masters thesis written in French and a PhD in English that compared colonialism in French and Australian films.

In my spare time I tutor French and keep up to date with French current affairs.

Let’s work together.
